Hire Becky Hammon, Just Do It
What if I told you that an assistant coach who’s been coaching since 2014 and has been the right-hand person to Greg Popovich isn’t being considered for an NBA head coaching job this season after all the failures. You’d call me crazy right?
That is what leads me to the next sentence:
Becky Hammon should be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
For me this is a no brainer, but for NBA executives it still seems to not be on their radars.
Hammon was a WNBA star that played for the San Antonio Stars, and the New York Liberty, and she was a player who truly got the game. I mean this girl was A BALLER. In her WNBA career she averaged 17.6 PPG, 4.9 APG, and once dropped 30 points in a conference semi-final with the Stars. I mean guys come on her nickname in the WNBA was “BIG SHOT BECKY” I mean COME ON!
This is a women who gets the game of basketball, and it translates into her coaching career. In her first gig as an assistant head coach she was trusted by one of the best coaches in the NBA Greg Popovich. This was her first gig! Her entire coaching career she has been trusted by one of the smartest, and toughest coaches in the entire NBA. There is no one better to learn from then Pop. She is also not only loved by her staff, but she is well respected by the players that she has coached as well.
Pau Gasol a former legend of the Spurs paid his respects to Becky in an open letter saying, “I’ve played with some of the best players of this generation … and I’ve played under two of the sharpest minds in the history of sports, in Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich. And I’m telling you: Becky Hammon can coach. I’m not saying she can coach pretty well. I’m not saying she can coach enough to get by. I’m not saying she can coach almost at the level of the NBA’s male coaches. I’m saying: Becky Hammon can coach NBA basketball. Period."
I mean this is the first woman to be a part of an All-Star coaching staff. THE FIRST ONE!
Now the question comes back to the Lakers….why not hire her?!
The Lakers organization is in shambles right now, a complete joke of an organization. Magic Johnson has just stepped down, Luke Walton was just released, Lebron didn’t lead your team to a playoff spot, and they need to hit the reset button. That breath of fresh air is Becky Hammon! This is a coach that Lebron can’t bully out of her position, because she commands respect. The hire would be revolutionary, which can mean all that negative news the Lakers have surrounding them would be vanished with the hire.
This Lakers organization has nothing to lose. They need to swallow their primate Lakers pride, and hire her. Everyone wants it. Everyone wants the NBA to remain revolutionary so Lakers you’ve got to do…
